Submitting an Institutional Animal Care & Use Protocol

NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) reviews all research protocols involving the use of live vertebrate animals. Protocols are reviewed by the IACUC at least once every three years to comply with regulations set by the U.S. Public Health Service and annually to comply with those set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Funding agencies, including those affiliated with the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation, require evidence that an institutional research protocol has received approval at the time funding is granted.

Submitting a Protocol

The principal investigator of a protocol is required to be an NYU Langone faculty member at the level of assistant professor or higher.

The principal investigator assumes full administrative, fiscal, and scientific responsibility for the conduct of the project and for the welfare of the animals used under the protocol.

Protocol Submission Deadline

It is suggested that a protocol should be submitted at least 90 days prior to the desired start date of proposed experiments involving vertebrate animals. The committee meets once each month.

Consulting a Veterinarian in the Division of Comparative Medicine

If you are proposing research involving potentially painful or distressing procedures on a species covered under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal Welfare Act, a consultation with an NYU Grossman School of Medicine Division of Comparative Medicine veterinarian is required prior to submission to the IACUC. This consultation is handled via the electronic protocol submission and review system.

Using Approved Custom Antibody Vendors

NYU Langone’s Office of Science and Research has approved certain vendors that produce custom antibodies for use in research involving live vertebrate animals. These vendors include Labcorp, Charles River Laboratories, Lampire Biological Laboratories, Mayo Clinic Immunology Core, Pocono Rabbit Farm and Laboratory, Noble Life Sciences, Envigo, and YenZym.

Submitting Protocols for IACUC Review Using Research Navigator

All research protocols submitted for review by NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee must be submitted using Research Navigator, which is accessible to NYU Grossman School of Medicine employees and partnering researchers with a Kerberos ID and password. If you have trouble logging in, call our help desk at 212-263-6868.
