Biomedical Graduate Student & Postdoc Professional Fulfillment & Wellbeing

NYU Grossman School of Medicine is committed to helping biomedical graduate students and postdoctoral fellows navigate professional, personal, and educational challenges that arise during training. We are proud to offer graduate students and postdocs access to an Ombuds Program to facilitate fair and equitable resolutions to work- and training-related questions, concerns, and complaints.

As employees of NYU Langone Health, graduate students and postdocs have access to numerous employee wellness programs (Kerberos ID and password required). The Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs provide additional resources and programs.

Diversity Resources

Diversity is a principal institutional value of NYU Grossman School of Medicine, and we are proud to provide an environment that nurtures inclusiveness. In collaboration with the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team at the Office of Science and Research, we are committed to recruiting trainees from underrepresented groups in the sciences, providing mentorship and professional development programs, and organizing community-building initiatives focused on promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion. Lab Management and Mentoring Program

NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Lab Management and Mentoring Program assists research faculty in developing the knowledge and skills to manage a research laboratory and team members, understanding unconscious bias and its potential impact on mentorship and management, and supporting the professional development of graduate students and postdocs.

We share knowledge, skills, and best practices to help all research faculty become effective mentors. We encourage faculty to regularly meet with trainees and address topics covered in the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) compact between biomedical graduate students and their research advisors, compact between postdoctoral appointees and their mentors, and appropriate treatment of research trainees.

Mental Health Resources

NYU Grossman School of Medicine provides resources to help graduate students and postdocs manage the demands of their professional and personal life. In addition to counseling services offered by Corporate Counseling Associates (Kerberos ID and password required), you have direct access to NYU Langone mental healthcare providers who can help you with stress, anxiety, depression, marital and family challenges, substance abuse disorders, eating disorders, and other behavioral health issues. Access mental health resources for graduate students and postdocs (Kerberos ID and password required).

National Institutes of Health Wellness Resources

The National Institutes of Health’s Office of Intramural Training and Education (OITE) recently made resources available to all trainees in the biomedical research community to enhance their training experience. Throughout the year, the NIH offers individual and group opportunities to promote wellbeing and resilience. Learn more about NIH Office of Intramural Training and Education wellness resources for graduate students and postdocs.

PhD Student Groups

We offer a number of PhD student groups for graduate students to work with peers outside of lab settings and network with fellow students who share similar interests. PhD students are encouraged to start new groups. Learn more about PhD student groups at the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences.

Resources for Reporting Compliance Concerns

NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Honor Code (Kerberos ID and password required) and Code of Conduct list general expectations of students at the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences as integral members of an ethical community. If trainees have concerns related to violations of either policy, they may make a confidential report via our compliance helpline. Learn more about how to report a compliance concern (Kerberos ID and password required).
