General Surgery Residency: Manhattan Admissions

The deadline for applications to NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s General Surgery Residency in Manhattan is October 31 of the academic year before the start of residency training. Our program has eight categorical and six preliminary positions.

How to Apply

NYU Langone’s Department of Surgery general residency participates in the National Resident Matching Program, also known as The Match. We accept applications for entry at the residency year-one (PGY-1) level only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). We do not accept PGY-2 applications through ERAS, nor do we offer pre-match. We accept applications regardless of graduation date.

The deadline for residency program applications is October 31, for an official start date of July 1. We begin downloading and reviewing applications in September when they are released to programs in ERAS. Interviews take place in November and December. Applicants who are selected for an interview will be notified by ERAS no later than November 10.

Information for International Medical Graduates

NYU Grossman School of Medicine accepts graduates of international medical schools. U.S. clinical experience is preferred but not mandatory. We do not offer H-1B sponsorship for house staff, residents, or fellows. J-1 sponsorship is available through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

ECFMG certification is not required to apply to our program; however, it is required before being offered an interview.

When applying to the General Surgery Residency in Manhattan through ERAS, the following items are required along with the application:

  • U.S. Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 completion

We have no minimum USMLE score requirement. USMLE Step 2 scores are not required at the time of the application process, but they must be submitted upon selection into the program.
