Jerome S. Coles Award

Recipients of the Jerome S. Coles Award represent some of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s most generous alumni supporters and advocates. This award pays tribute to the legacy of Jerome S. Coles, MD ’36, who earned his undergraduate degree from the College of Arts and Science.

A distinguished surgeon with a passion for science, Dr. Coles taught medical students, interns, and residents at what was then known as the Bellevue Hospital Center and, after retiring, joined the Philip A. Hunt Chemical Corporation, ultimately becoming its chief executive officer. Dr. Coles later served as chair of the board of NYU Langone from 1977 until 1984.

An effective and imaginative leader, he helped structure NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s programs of excellence in research, education, and patient care.
