Speech–Language Pathology Externship

NYU Langone’s Rusk Rehabilitation offers a Speech–Language Pathology Externship to eligible candidates who are in their final semester of an accredited master’s degree program. Applicants need to apply from an institution that is fully accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), a national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for 204,000 members and affiliates who are audiologists; speech–language pathologists; speech, language, and hearing scientists; audiology and speech–language pathology support personnel; and students.

Our program is designed to expand our trainees’ competency in diagnostic-specific evaluations and treatment skills.

Under direct supervision, externs have the opportunity to work with medically complex patients who have a variety of speech, language, and swallowing disorders in both inpatient and outpatient settings. During their externships, students have opportunities to learn the following skills:

  • analyzing medical documents
  • presenting clinical information logically and clearly to patients, caregivers, and healthcare professionals
  • identifying speech and language problems during patient screenings
  • identifying voice and swallowing problems during patient screenings
  • choosing appropriate diagnostic instruments
  • conducting assessments
  • scoring and interpreting patient findings correctly

Externs may apply to work in our adult inpatient rehabilitation units, ambulatory outpatient clinics, or acute inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation units at some of our rehabilitation sites in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Our clinical sites include Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care Center East 38th Street, Cochlear Implant Center, Head and Neck Center, Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and Rusk Rehabilitation Brooklyn at 60th Street. We invite externs to explore a variety of clinical specialties, including adult swallowing disorders, concussion symptoms, head and neck cancer, voice disorders, cochlear implants, acute speech–language pathology, and adult neurogenic language, communicative competence, and swallowing.

Schedules vary per program and clinical supervisor, but externs can expect to work Monday through Friday from 8:30AM to 5:00PM. The dress code is appropriate business attire. Externs must wear their identification badges above their waists at all times.

Externship Application Process

Given the degree of clinical expertise required for success in our program, eligible candidates must be in their final semester of an accredited speech–language pathology master’s degree program and have strong academic records.

We can only consider candidates from schools that have valid contracts with NYU Langone for placement into our externship program. Please confirm with your school’s field placement supervisors whether a valid contract is in place. Your field placement supervisor will coordinate consideration for placement in Manhattan with program director Mary Regina Reilly, MS, CCC-SLP, or in Brooklyn with program manager of clinical education Enza Navarra.

All placements are conditionally offered pending successful completion of a nontraditional volunteer background check and onboarding process.
