Speech-Language Pathology Externship
The Speech-Language Pathology Department of the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine (RIRM), New York University Langone Medical Center, offers externship experience to a small number of selected graduate students each year. Clinical services in the Department are primarily focused on patients with neurogenic communication disorders.
Medical speech-language pathology externships are available in three areas:
- Neurogenic Communication Disorders
- Cochlear Implant, Speech-Language Pathology
- Head & Neck, Speech-Language Pathology
Neurogenic Communication Disorders
Offered throughout the calendar year, 37.5 Hours per week. (12 Weeks), Weekdays from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. Training at the Speech-Language Pathology Department, The Ambulatory Care Center, 240 East 38th Street, New York, NY, 10016.
Cochlear Implant Speech-Language Pathology
Offered fall, spring, summer semesters to one graduate student per semester, 20 Hours per week, (15 Weeks). Training at the Cochlear Implant Center, Speech-Language Pathology Unit, 660 1st Avenue, New York, NY, 10016, Room 700.
Head & Neck, Speech-Language Pathology
Offered fall, spring, summer semesters to one graduate student per semester, 2 to 3 days per week, 8am to 6pm. Training at Tisch Hospital, Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, and the Department of Otolaryngology.
Before an interview is arranged, applicants must submit:
- Letter of Intent
- Cover Letter and Resume
- Letter from a faculty member supporting participation
- An official graduate school transcript
Candidates, may apply who have completed their coursework and other clinical experiences. Because of the degree of clinical expertise required it is preferable that externships take place during the last semester of graduate work immediately preceding the CFY requirement.
Externship candidates are selected on the basis of their academic record and particular interest in the communicative disorder specialty areas of training.. Appointments for an in-person interview are scheduled after the letter of intent, support letter and official transcript have been reviewed. A legal contract between the student’s university and the NYU Langone Medical Center.
The RIRM Speech-Language Pathology externship training program is designed as a simulated work experience and consists primarily of supervised clinical experience. The program also includes orientation, guided reading, and attendance at meetings. In the course of the externship, the distribution of supervised clinical hours is at the discretion of the supervisory staff. In order for externs to accommodate required hours for training, absences or delays cannot be made up. Students are expected to arrange and cover the costs of housing, transportation, travel, and health insurance.
The Speech-Language Pathology Department of the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York University Langone Medical Center, is fully accredited by the Professional Services Board of the American Board of Examiners of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in Speech-Language Pathology.
