Stem Cell Biology PhD Training Program Curriculum

The Stem Cell Biology PhD Training Program at Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences provides a highly focused curriculum to train scientists in the field of stem cell biology and its rapidly evolving clinical applications.

Our program exposes students to basic and clinical aspects of stem cell biology through coursework, scientific interactions, and research. Students develop an in-depth understanding of the field while working in a highly interactive and collaborative research environment.

Students must fulfill the general requirements of the Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and the specific requirements of the Stem Cell Biology PhD Training Program.

Current students can download forms for the qualifying exam, committee meeting reports, and important information on thesis defenses and graduation by logging into our student community with their Kerberos ID.

Coursework

Stem cell biology students typically choose from the following courses:

Developmental and Stem Cell Systems I (DSCS I)
Developmental and Stem Cell Systems II (DSCS II)
Stem Cell Tutorial
Seminar in Stem Cell Biology
Topics in Molecular Biology
Genetics

Cell Biology and Introduction to Molecular Genetics may also be selected. For more information, view our PhD course catalog.

Selected elective courses include the following:

Molecular Oncology
Introduction to Immunology
Molecular Mechanisms in Biology

All stem cell biology students are required to attend the annual Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Center for Stem Cell Biology retreat.

As a student in the program, you also have the opportunity to participate in departmental and institute seminars; local, national, and international conferences; and career development seminars.
