The Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, part of NYU Langone Health’s Department of Orthopedic Surgery, is at the forefront of clinical care, research, and education. Our faculty are dedicated to providing state-of-the-art treatment for all conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow. We are devoted to educating tomorrow’s shoulder and elbow surgeons and conducting research with the goal of enhancing quality of life for people affected by shoulder and elbow injuries and disorders.

Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Education

Medical students wishing to explore orthopedic surgery may enroll in electives with the Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery as part of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Curriculum for the 21st Century. House staff participate in rotations as part of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery’s residency program.

Our clinical fellowship program started in 1994 and provides trainees with high-volume experience and diverse surgical opportunities at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, NYU Langone Outpatient Surgery Center, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care—23rd Street, and Joan H. and Preston Robert Tisch Center at Essex Crossing. Fellows receive extensive clinical training in both nonsurgical and surgical treatment of shoulder and elbow injuries and diseases, from sprains to reconstructive surgery and joint replacement.

Our education curriculum includes a robust academic conference, research conference, journal club, bioskills surgical training labs, and a variety of annual continuing medical education programs.

Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Research

Faculty, fellows, residents, and medical students in our division engage in research activities as part of the Shoulder and Elbow Research Group at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital. The group conducts both clinical and basic science research on a wide variety of topics pertinent to shoulder and elbow problems, including arthritis, rotator cuff tears, and instability. Advanced experimental treatments and procedures for orthopedic conditions are subjects of ongoing clinical trials conducted under the auspices of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.

Our faculty publish widely in peer-reviewed journals and present their research findings at local, national, and international medical conferences including the annual meetings of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons.

Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Clinical Services

Our surgeons provide both surgical and nonsurgical treatment of athletic, traumatic, degenerative, and congenital injuries and disorders, including rotator cuff tears, instability issues, arthritis, and fractures of the shoulder and elbow.

Our orthopedic surgeons provide care for shoulder and elbow conditions at Tisch Hospital, Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYU Langone Orthopedic Center, NYU Langone Ambulatory Care West Side, NYU Langone Orthopedics—Westchester, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System.

Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Leadership and Administration

The Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery is led by Mandeep S. Virk, MD, chief and director of research and education. Andrew S. Rokito, MD, is the director of the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship, and Young W. Kwon, MD, PhD, serves as the fellowship’s co-director. Our leadership team also includes Joseph D. Zuckerman, MD, chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery.
