The three-year clinician–educator pathway in the Fellowship Training Program in Cardiovascular Disease, offered by the Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology, is designed for physicians interested in pursuing a career focused on evidence-based patient care and education.

This pathway comprises about 27 months of core clinical training, complemented by 9 months of electives including research time.

Although research blocks are spread throughout the three years of the program, fellows acquire the majority of clinical knowledge, patient care skills, and procedural abilities in the first two years of training, with a variety of clinical laboratory rotations and clinical service rotations. During the third year of the program, trainees continue to refine their skills as cardiovascular consultants in the coronary care units and on the heart failure and consultation services, and then pursue an array of electives.

Elective block time can include training in one of several specific areas of cardiovascular medicine such as heart failure, adult congenital heart disease, cardiomyopathy, vascular medicine, noninvasive imaging, and preventive cardiology.

Fellows may select longer blocks of training in echocardiography and nuclear cardiology, leading to eligibility for the certifying examinations offered by the National Board of Echocardiography and the Certification Board of Nuclear Cardiology. Additional months of training in interventional cardiology or clinical cardiac electrophysiology provide a strong basis for advanced fellowship training in those disciplines.

Consequently, completing the clinician–educator pathway can make fellows highly competitive applicants for advanced training programs, accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, in clinical cardiac electrophysiology, interventional cardiology, advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, or adult congenital heart disease.
