Advanced Cardiology Fellowships Adult Congenital Heart Disease Fellowship

Adult Congenital Heart Disease Fellowship

The Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology, a part of NYU Langone’s Department of Medicine, offers a two-year Adult Congenital Heart Disease Fellowship, which is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We accept one applicant every two years.

This advanced training program provides expert and dedicated training in all aspects of adult congenital heart disease (ACHD), cardio-obstetrics, and connective tissue diseases to prepare fellows for the ACHD board exam. Fellows participate in outpatient and inpatient longitudinal evaluation, as well as treatment and follow-up of patients in a multidisciplinary and collaborative manner. Moreover, our training program offers a collegial and supportive environment with strong mentorship and exciting research opportunities. The curriculum is tailored to the fellow’s past clinical experience, whether this was in pediatric or adult populations.

NYU Langone’s Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program was the first in New York State to be accredited as a Comprehensive Care Center by the Adult Congenital Heart Association. Our specialists follow approximately 2,500 patients and perform more than 150 procedures and surgeries per year. Our patients receive specialized care in congenital interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, and cardiac surgery.

In addition, NYU Langone’s structural heart disease program and Heart Rhythm Center both serve as trial sites for novel transcatheter techniques, and the heart transplant program is the one of the fastest growing and strongest in the country. Our fellowship educational sites are located within minutes of each other on First Avenue in Manhattan and include NYU Langone Medical Center and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue.

Fellowship Mission and Aims

The mission of our fellowship is to prepare selected individuals for careers in clinical practice and in the academic pursuits of ACHD, including scientific investigation. This training occurs within the setting of a rapidly changing national and local landscape. Our program uses the broad clinical experiences, extensive facilities, and innumerable research opportunities available at NYU Langone, one of the nation’s premier academic medical institutions and whose purpose is to serve, teach, and discover.

The Adult Congenital Heart Disease Fellowship aims to provide trainees the following:

  • a pluripotent educational program with a rigorous training environment and the resources required to ensure that fellows graduate as expert ACHD consultants
  • training that ensures graduates are desirable as practitioners, investigators, and educators who are future leaders in cardiology
  • longitudinal experiences in ACHD outpatient clinics and inpatient settings, as well as intensive training in the application of basic and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic imaging and invasive techniques
  • a training environment that instills competence in the interprofessional care of patients who have ACHD by promoting professionalism and enhancing communication skills
  • skills in empowering patients to advocate for themselves during and after the complex and difficult transition from pediatric to adult care
  • opportunities to educate patients, families, other caregivers and their communities about the limitations, needs, and abilities of patients who have ACHD and how best to serve and support them
  • training of the next generation of ACHD specialists to fill a distinct and widening gap in patient care expertise engendered by the aging of the congenital heart disease patient population and the success of surgical treatments they have received
  • training in the latest science pertaining to ACHD and the competence to interpret and assimilate these data into practice
