Preventive Cardiology Fellowship

NYU Langone’s Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease offers a one-year, nonaccredited training program in preventive cardiology and metabolic health. The Preventive Cardiology Fellowship provides extensive clinical training in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.

Fellows gain experience in our advanced lipid, hypertension, and thrombosis clinics, an outpatient general cardiovascular prevention and metabolic health clinic, as well as through inpatient cardiovascular prevention consultation, didactic training, and research.

Our center’s experts are leaders in their fields and hail from a variety of subspecialties, including hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, women’s heart disease, thrombosis and hemostasis, and integrative medicine.

Fellows have a remarkable opportunity to learn about patients with varying genetic and socioeconomic backgrounds, in addition to healthcare disparities among different populations. Trainees also have the opportunity to complete advanced courses in lipid management, including a two-day course provided by the National Lipid Association’s, Foundations of Lipidology. In addition, fellows are encouraged to pursue certification in clinical lipidology through the National Lipid Association and complete a hypertension specialist certification through the American Hypertension Specialist Certification Program.

Fellowship Mission and Aims

Our fellowship is a comprehensive educational program designed to provide the requisite knowledge, skills, and professional behaviors for the most expert practice of preventive cardiology. Our faculty impart a spirit of inquiry and encourage fellows to pursue lifelong learning in this ever-evolving field.

Fellowship Rotations

Rotations include training in several outpatient clinics, including both primary and secondary cardiovascular disease prevention, advanced lipid disorders, hypertension, and thrombosis disorders.

Fellows are primary participants in an active inpatient consultation service for people undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention and atrial fibrillation ablation, as well as for individuals after cerebrovascular accident.

Our faculty provide expert instruction in nutrition counseling, cardiac rehabilitation, obesity management, and exercise prescription. A close collaboration with our colleagues in the Holman Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism is evidenced through weekly joint academic meetings and our shared yearly continuing medical education symposium on prevention.

Fellows are also actively engaged in scholarly activity in the form of quality improvement, literature review, and original investigation, under the mentorship of our remarkably productive faculty.

Fellowship Didactic Training

Our fellows participate in journal clubs, preventive cardiology case conferences, and cardiovascular disease core curriculum conferences. Clinical research conferences comprising reports on independent investigations, topic reviews, and multicenter trials are also part of the academic curriculum.

Enrollment in the National Lipid Association’s Foundations of Lipidology course and membership in the American Society of Preventive Cardiology are provided to fellows free of charge.

Fellowship Leadership

Arthur Z. Schwartzbard, MD, is the director of the Preventive Cardiology Fellowship, and Howard Weintraub, MD, is the associate fellowship director. Fellows train with expert thought leaders in their respective fields. Their subspecialty domains include hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, women’s heart disease, nutrition, exercise, thrombotic disorders, and integrative medicine.
