The Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology at NYU Langone offers a one-year Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Fellowship. The training program is structured within a comprehensive array of tertiary and quaternary care facilities for patients with advanced heart failure, including mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplant.

Our fellowship has been fully accredited by the Accreditation Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) since its inception in 2014.

In collaboration with NYU Langone Transplant Institute, our heart transplant program has grown rapidly since its inception in 2018 to become one of the most successful in the nation in orthotopic heart and dual organ transplants. We have achieved among the shortest wait list times and best post-transplant outcomes in the nation. In addition, we are in the vanguard with programs for donation after cardiac death and hepatitis C–positive donors.

Fellowship Mission and Aims

Our training program prepares fellows for academic and clinical careers in the subspecialty of advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology. Fellows have access to a broad range of clinical experiences, advanced medical facilities, and research opportunities.

Our training program provides fellows with remarkable clinical exposure to mechanical circulatory support, orthotopic cardiac transplantation, endomyocardial biopsy, post-transplant surveillance, and care in multidisciplinary settings. Our program also offers support for scholarly activities, leadership training for management of heart failure programs, implementation of quality improvement and patient safety initiatives, and personal and professional development.

Fellowship Rotations

Fellows participate in several rotations in which they acquire comprehensive knowledge of cardiomyopathy, cardiovascular genetics, adult congenital heart disease, pulmonary arterial hypertension, cardiopulmonary stress testing, and multidisciplinary disease management. Trainees also play a key role in the education of internal medicine house staff and fellows in the core specialty of cardiovascular disease.

Combined Work and Teaching Rounds

Fellows participate in combined work and teaching inpatient rounds, supervised by board-certified heart failure subspecialists and cardiothoracic surgeons at NYU Langone and NYC + Health Hospitals/Bellevue.

Training occurs in the cardiovascular intensive care unit where fellows see patients with cardiogenic shock, those requiring acute circulatory support, left ventricular assist device (LVAD) support, and post-transplant care. A cardiac care unit rotation includes cardiac telemetry and advanced heart failure consultation.

Invasive Procedures

Training also includes rotations in which fellows perform invasive procedures such as right-heart catheterizations, endomyocardial biopsy, and vasodilator testing.

Outpatient Clinics

Outpatient care includes a weekly heart failure continuity clinic at Bellevue, LVAD and cardiac transplant clinics, an implantable cardioverter defibrillator and cardiac resynchronization therapy clinic for electrophysiological device optimization, and a cardiopulmonary exercise testing clinic.

Elective Rotations

Elective rotations in our fellowship include outcomes research such as quality metrics for LVAD, heart transplant, and general heart failure, and other scholarly activities.

Fellowship Didactic Training

Our didactic program includes weekly case presentations with literature reviews, core curriculum seminars, and a weekly journal club discussion.

Our core curriculum includes a weekly didactic session presented by expert faculty covering topics specific to advanced heart failure, transplant, and mechanical support. These lectures draw on our core faculty and key collaborating support faculty, including cardiovascular surgeons, pathologists, and specialists in infectious disease, clinical immunology, palliative care, critical care medicine, and neurocognitive testing, among others.

Our mechanical circulatory support and transplant programs also conduct weekly multidisciplinary selection meetings that include didactics relevant to patient selection and ethics, a biweekly journal club targeting updates in literature relevant to advanced heart failure, and a monthly extracorporeal membrane oxygenation clinical conference.

Fellowship Leadership

Stuart D. Katz, MD, fellowship director, is the Helen L. and Martin S. Kimmel Professor of Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics and director of NYU Langone’s Heart Failure Advanced Care Center. His scientific focus is patient-oriented research in human physiology and pharmacology of heart failure and vascular disease. His National Institutes of Health–funded research interests include novel pharmacological approaches to restoring sympathovagal balance in heart failure; vascular physiological effects of nonpulsatile flow during durable ventricular assist device support; and clinical trials to determine optimal revascularization strategies in patients with ischemic cardiomyopathy. In addition, Dr. Katz has an extensive track record in mentoring clinician investigators.

Only graduates of accredited programs in cardiovascular disease are considered. Applications are accepted beginning in July via the Electronic Residency Application Service^® (ERAS^®). Candidate selection is via the National Residency Matching Program^® (NRMP^®).
