Internship in Quality, Patient Safety & Healthcare Management

The Center for Quality and Patient Safety offers an internship in quality, patient safety, and healthcare management that provides students a strong foundation in quality and patient safety principles, with a focus on healthcare operations and management. The five components of this internship are patient safety, patient satisfaction, quality indicators, public policy initiatives, and improvement strategies.

As a student in our internship program, which is offered in partnership with NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, you learn real-world strategies and mechanisms for planning, implementing, and measuring quality and patient safety initiatives. You meet with members of the orthopedic management team to gain a greater understanding of key management roles, members’ work requirements, and a designated career path needed to obtain a position in healthcare management.

All students are required to submit a research article on a quality, safety, or healthcare management topic for publication upon completion of the internship.

The internship is for a one-year period. You are expected to work 14 to 16 hours per week, which includes attending meetings and time to work on your project.

Applicants may apply for a position at NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, or NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island. Please note your location preference in your application.

How to Apply

We accept applications on a rolling basis. There are two application cycles: one for a September start date and one for a March start date. For the September start date, we review applications during the preceding spring. For the March start date, we review applications during the preceding fall. Please note your preferred start date in your application.

The internship is geared toward students at NYU Wagner and NYU Stern School of Business. Students from other institutions are given consideration on a case-by-case basis.

Successful applicants are highly motivated and intelligent team players who demonstrate a strong track record of academic achievement. Applicants are required to submit one letter of recommendation from an NYU faculty member and a 500-word statement describing why they are qualified for our internship. Please submit your application to Lorraine Hutzler, MPA, associate program director of the Center for Quality and Patient Safety, at lorraine.hutzler@nyulangone.org.
