Palliative Care Clinical Services

Physicians in NYU Langone’s Division of Geriatric Medicine and Palliative Care offer comprehensive, interdisciplinary palliative care services, also referred to as supportive care, to patients with serious illness such as cancer, kidney failure, advanced degenerative neurological conditions, and cardiac and pulmonary disease.

Inpatient Palliative Care Consult Service

NYU Langone’s inpatient palliative care program conducts more than 1,900 consults annually and has received specialty certification from The Joint Commission. Our physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, and chaplains work with patients and families to develop a compassionate supportive care plan reflecting patient goals. We care for patients with cancer and advanced organ disease, including those who may be candidates for therapies such as organ transplant, left ventricular assist devices, and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation.

Kidney CARES Program

Kidney CARES (Comprehensive Advanced Renal Disease and End Stage Renal Disease Support) Program is a unique outpatient program at NYU Langone Nephrology Associates for patients with serious kidney disease that integrates palliative care with nephrology. Our goals are to improve quality of life, assist with treatment decision making, and support patients and families.

Cardiac and Pulmonary Supportive Care Clinic

NYU Langone’s cardiac and pulmonary supportive care clinic specializes in improving quality of life for patients with advanced cardiac and pulmonary disease. Supportive Oncology and Palliative Care Service at Perlmutter Cancer Center

Our interdisciplinary outpatient supportive oncology and palliative care service at NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center provides care for patients to improve quality of life, reduce pain and other symptoms, and assist with goal-oriented, tailored treatment planning.

Inpatient Palliative Care Consult Service at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue

Our inpatient palliative care consult service at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, accredited with Advanced Certification for Palliative Care from The Joint Commission, serves a diverse and often vulnerable patient population. Our team works with experts in child life, therapeutic arts, legal health, psychiatry, critical care, and community hospices to serve our patients and families. Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue

We offer a growing outpatient palliative care program with five weekly clinic sessions embedded in the oncology clinics at Bellevue. The program serves adults with cancer and non-cancer diagnoses such as heart failure and advanced kidney, liver, or lung disease. Our clinic is staffed with physicians, nurse practitioners, and social workers trained in palliative medicine. Inpatient Palliative Care Consult Service at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System

The inpatient palliative care consult service at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System provides up to 325 consults per year. Our interdisciplinary team has significantly expanded during the last nine years and includes hospice and palliative medicine fellows, nurse practitioner students from the NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing, VA NY Harbor Healthcare System psychology postdoctoral fellows, psychology interns, and chaplain interns, residents, and fellows. Outpatient Palliative Care Clinic at the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System

The VA NY Harbor Healthcare System has a weekly outpatient clinic in which our hospice and palliative medicine fellows provide care. We have developed outreach to VA Patient Aligned Care Team providers to encourage referral of high-risk patients, based on high VA Care Assessment Need scores. The inpatient palliative care consult team at NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn sees more than 500 patients annually. We ensure consults are timely and enhance the quality of life for patients and families. Our doctors, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other specialists provide patients with goals of care discussions and plans for symptom management, while tending to their psychosocial and spiritual needs.
