Multidisciplinary Addiction Training Program

Our team at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, NYU Rory College of Nursing, and NYU Silver School of Social Work is pleased to announce a new multidisciplinary addiction training program called NYU MAT.

NYU MAT provides a one-year addiction clinical curriculum for interested allied health learners. Learners participate in addiction didactics and clinical training alongside three addiction medicine fellows at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. We offer these two tracks:

  • MAT Scholars: Current students dedicate up to 10 hours a month pursuing addiction training, with flexible scheduling to accommodate full-time school schedules and outside employment. Stipends are $10,000 per year.
  • MAT Fellows: Postgraduate allied health professionals train and work with us full-time across NYU Langone and affiliated healthcare institutions, with the possibility of certification in addiction advanced practice depending on discipline. Stipends are up to $100,000 and reflect prevailing full-time wages per specialty at NYU Langone.

We are currently recruiting for two cohorts of 15+ MAT Scholars and 3 full-time MAT Fellow positions. We prioritize diversity and inclusion and are seeking candidates from underrepresented minority backgrounds.

Program Goals

By the end of the program, learners in these programs accomplish the following:

  • gain a thorough understanding of addiction including the physiological, psychological, and sociological aspects of addiction
  • acquire practical skills for assessment, intervention, and treatment of addiction, and related conditions
  • develop a holistic, multidisciplinary perspective on addiction by learning from experts in various disciplines
  • build a network of contacts within the NYU academic community and field of addiction

MAT Scholars: Multidisciplinary Scholarship Program

The part-time addiction scholarship program, called MAT Scholars, offers an immersive and comprehensive learning experience for students interested in the field of addiction. This program combines a weekly Webex series, interactive workshops, and in-person experiences with addiction experts at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, NYU Rory School of Nursing, and NYU Silver School of Social Work.

This program is designed to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of addiction medicine, encompassing both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. The course structure includes the following elements.

Weekly Webex Series

Students engage in a weekly Webex series where experts at NYU schools and colleges deliver lectures and facilitate journal club discussions on topics such as opioid use disorder and harm reduction, smoking and tobacco control, and health equity and vulnerable populations. Students also attend guest lectures from substance use disorder experts from treatment centers and programs throughout New York state.

Interactive Workshops

Throughout the program, students participate in hands-on workshops, focusing on practical addiction treatment skills, such as harm reduction strategies, motivational interviewing, and screening and assessment techniques. These workshops equip students with the skills necessary to work with patients with substance use disorders.

In-Person Experiences

A highlight of this course is the opportunity for students to interact with addiction experts in medicine, nursing, and social work in person. These experiences may include shadowing in addiction clinics and in person consultation services, volunteering at harm reduction and residential treatment centers, and visiting substance use disorder meetings and support groups.

MAT Fellows: Postgraduate Multidisciplinary Fellowship

The full-time postgraduate addiction fellowship program, called MAT Fellows, offers an intensive one-year experience for nurses, social workers, therapists, and other allied health professionals who are seeking advanced training in addiction medicine.

Fellows work and learn with three NYU Langone addiction medicine fellows, as well as with the scholars in the scholarship program. They gain experience in diverse addiction care settings, including outpatient and inpatient rotations at NYU Langone and NYC Health + Hospital locations, as well as Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) sites, such as residential treatment centers. Fellowship highlights include the following.

Comprehensive Curriculum

Fellows explore a wide range of addiction-related topics, from the latest research and evidence-based practices, to prevention, treatment modalities, and recovery strategies. They learn alongside NYU Langone addiction medicine fellows, as well as NYU MAT Scholars.

Clinical Training

Fellows rotate through outpatient and inpatient addiction services, learning from renowned addiction specialists. Rotations provide hands-on experience in assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of substance use disorders and related conditions.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Fellows collaborate clinically and academically with a diverse team of healthcare professionals, including physicians, social workers, nurses, counselors, and other non-physician addiction professionals, who foster a holistic understanding of addiction treatment and recovery.

Duration and Time Commitment

Both the MAT Scholars and MAT Fellows programs are a year-long experience.

Part-time scholarship participation involves nine months of active programming, two months of summer self-study, and equals a five to ten hour a month time commitment throughout the academic year.

Full-time fellows are considered NYU Grossman School of Medicine employees for 12 months. Work weeks are generally 9:00AM to 5:00PM or 8:00AM to 4:00PM, Monday through Friday.

Stipends

MAT Scholars receive a $10,000 annual stipend paid over 10 months.

MAT Fellows receive up to $100,000 in an annual stipend paid over 12 months, adjusted to specialty and prevailing wages at NYU Langone.
