Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism Fellowship Curriculum

The Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship at NYU Grossman School of Medicine is designed to provide fellows with increasing responsibilities and levels of independence as they progress through the program. This enables trainees to develop expertise and confidence in their skills as clinicians, educators, and researchers.

Inpatient Training for Fellows

Inpatient training occurs at our three clinical sites—NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. Fellows in the Holman Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism work as consultants under the supervision of the endocrine attending. During each four-week block, one inpatient fellow covers the NYU Langone site, one fellow covers the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System site, and two fellows cover the Bellevue site. First- and second-year fellows staff the inpatient services, but most inpatient consultation time occurs in the first year of fellowship.

Together, the three hospital sites offer robust clinical training with varied populations, endocrine pathology, and a sufficient volume of patient cases that provide our fellows with substantial experience in inpatient endocrinology consultation.

Ambulatory Training for Fellows

Ambulatory training for fellows occurs in two phases. During the first, they participate in continuity clinics at Bellevue and the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System. The second phase is a rotation at our Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Health.

Continuity Clinics

Throughout their time in our program, first- and second-year fellows participate actively in three of our core clinics:

  • a combined diabetes–endocrine clinic at Bellevue
  • an additional weekly endocrine clinic at Bellevue
  • a combined diabetes–endocrine clinic at the Manhattan campus of the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System
  • a rotating thyroid ultrasound fine-needle aspiration biopsy clinic at Bellevue

In these ambulatory continuity clinics, our fellows have primary patient care responsibility. In this role, they employ appropriate consultative services and design and implement patient care plans under the supervision of clinic attending physician staff.

Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Health Rotation

The second component of ambulatory training in the fellowship program is a rotation at our Center for Diabetes and Metabolic Health. First-year fellows spend two four-week blocks here, where the focus is on diabetes management, including learning insulin pump and continuous glucose monitor management. In addition to being mentored by faculty, fellows see patients who have neuroendocrine disease, lipid disorders, and thyroid disease. Second-year fellows focus on diagnostic thyroid ultrasound and fine-needle aspiration biopsy of the thyroid with Steven Hodak, MD, and Chelsey K. Baldwin, MD, and Julie A. Probst-Riordan, MD, at Bellevue.

Teaching Opportunities for Fellows

Throughout training, our fellows have opportunities to teach ambulatory and inpatient electives to a variety of learners, including our medical students, interns, residents, and other fellows on rotations in our clinics.

Our faculty support fellows in their teaching roles and provide them with feedback as they progress through the program.

Research Opportunities for Fellows

Trainees in the program devote a significant portion of the second year of the fellowship to research. Preparation begins during a first-year research block, when each fellow meets with José O. Alemán, MD, PhD, to discuss research interests and potential mentors for scholarly activities. Dr. Alemán continues to mentor fellows in their research endeavors throughout the training program.

During the second year of training, fellows devote 60 percent of their time to a well-defined research question—clinical, basic, or a combination of the two.

Research in endocrinology, diabetes, and metabolic disease takes many forms at NYU Langone, and we encourage fellows to follow their interests. We support projects in basic science, population sciences, or translational studies that lie outside the divisional or departmental expertise. Fellows may also elect to work with a principal investigator on clinical research protocols that comprise the division’s portfolio at the Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

Fellows present their work to the division and, working with their mentors, prepare their work for publication, presentation at a national meeting, or both.

Conferences for Fellows

The clinical experience at NYU Langone is complemented by a highly interactive didactic education in basic and clinical arenas, during which fellows are taught by our expert physicians and scientists. This includes a variety of conferences:

  • board review course
  • case management conference
  • endocrine summer series
  • endocrine core conference
  • grand rounds series
  • endocrine and diabetes journal clubs
  • monthly interdisciplinary thyroid and parathyroid cytology conferences
  • neuroendocrine conferences
  • thyroid cytology conference
  • thyroid–nuclear medicine conference
  • diabetes core conference
