Cardiovascular Digital Health Laboratory

The mission of the Cardiovascular Digital Health Laboratory, a part of NYU Langone’s Leon H. Charney Division of Cardiology, is to expand access of new health technologies to medically understudied populations. Members of our laboratory, led by John A. Dodson, MD, MPH, plan and conduct clinical trials evaluating novel cardiovascular digital tools in older adults, minorities, and other understudied groups.

Our laboratory partners with other informatics and digital health capabilities at NYU Langone to explore and coordinate cardiovascular clinical expertise, data science, and applied technology. This enables us to build our clinical trial infrastructure, develop innovative solutions to improve population health, anticipate the scaling of cardiovascular technology, and foster collaboration with academic and industry partners.

Building Clinical Trial Infrastructure

Our research infrastructure is based on models established in other clinical trials led by Dr. Dodson, including Rehabilitation at Home Using Mobile Health in Older Adults After Hospitalization for Ischemic Heart Disease (RESILIENT) and Behavioral Economics Trial to Enhance Regulation of Blood Pressure (BETTER-BP).

We collaborate with NYU Langone’s Medical Center Information Technology (MCIT), research informatics, and DataCore to further develop infrastructure and methodologies, improving the yield of electronic outreach to NYU Langone patients for cardiovascular clinical trial enrollment. This lays the groundwork for rapidly enrolling adequately powered and broadly representative cohorts in future studies.

Developing Innovative Solutions to Improve Population Health

We are partnering with the Division of Cardiology’s clinical services team, NYU Langone Cardiology Associates, the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone, and MCIT leadership to develop innovative solutions to improve population health through blood pressure management, medication adherence, and arrhythmia monitoring.

Our laboratory’s current focus is on facilitating the workflow of ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) data for cardiologists, clinic nurses, and their patients. We are currently selecting patients for the rigorous evaluation of blood pressure cuff technology that syncs via Bluetooth, enabling remote monitoring; there is currently no open enrollment. We aim to increase uptake of ABPM and to assess the proportion of cardiology patients with blood pressure at goal. Study data are integrated with the electronic health record, MCIT, and FuturePractice.

Scaling Cardiovascular Health Technology

We plan to scale remote cardiovascular health patient monitoring, making it applicable to other projects. These may include developing novel home monitoring initiatives for high-risk populations, establishing workflows for interpreting sensor data obtained from smart watches, and incorporating physical activity tracking data into clinical encounters.

Technologies change quickly, and by design these projects evolve. Project selection is through an iterative process with feedback that includes cardiologists, MCIT leadership, and patients.

Fostering Collaboration

Our laboratory values assembling and collaborating with investigators who have aligned interests. Our goal is to enable knowledge sharing among physician–scientists, which helps facilitate partnerships on future research studies.
