Institute for Excellence in Health Equity Medical Education Pillar

The medical education pillar of NYU Langone’s Institute for Excellence in Health Equity strives to transform medical education by integrating knowledge and practice of health equity principles into the training of staff, students, trainees, and faculty. Our mentorship programs and trainings ensure that students and residents integrate health equity into their practice.

In partnership with the Office of Medical Education, Office of Diversity Affairs, Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, Office of Graduate Medical Education, Section for Health Equity, and the Diversity Health Equity Committee, we mentor trainees and faculty regarding professional milestones, thus encouraging and facilitating successful academic careers. We also deliver health equity modules, research opportunities for trainees, and faculty leadership programs for faculty who are underrepresented in medicine (URiM).

Our goals to improve undergraduate medical education (UME) and graduate medical education (GME) pertaining to health equity include the following:

  • assessing the current state of health equity education at NYU Langone
  • embedding health equity education across NYU Langone
  • ensuring faculty are equipped to teach and practice excellence in health equity
  • advancing scholarships in health equity medical education research

Collaborations

Our collaborations drive our efforts to embed health equity into medical education and training. Through internal and external partners, we are able to implement our programs.

In collaboration with The Empathy Project, we provide education on incorporating empathy into medicine. The Elephant in the Waiting Room is an animated film that teaches about the interplay between implicit bias and empathy produced by The Empathy Project.

We also work with the New York Simulation Center for the Health Sciences (NYSIM) to aid in the development of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations to ensure health equity content is embedded within simulation experiences

In collaboration with the Office of Diversity Affairs, we are offering an advanced clinically integrated science selective (ACISS) course on health equity. The course allows senior students to build off prior experience in health equity education.
