Collaborative Center in Children’s Environmental Health Research & Translation Pilot Project Program

The Collaborative Center in Children’s Environmental Health Research and Translation (CEHRT) Pilot Project Program serves to fund research regarding the impacts of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, environmental health equity, and climate change topics. The goal of the CEHRT Pilot Project Program is to accumulate a substantial scientific knowledge base from research efforts led by NYU Langone, NYU, and external postdoctoral researchers about the effects of environmental exposures on children’s health to facilitate translation of research results into programs, interventions, and policies.

We encourage new early investigators who wish to establish independent research careers in environmental health sciences (EHS), motivate non-EHS researchers to direct their expertise toward environmental health problems, and develop robust, collaborative translational and developmental research programs. Each year, the Center for the Investigation of Environmental Hazards sends out a call for applications for this mentored training research program with the promise of advancing translational child environmental health through testing and adapting promising or evidence-based interventions in diverse settings and utilizing implementation science and dissemination research frameworks to improve uptake and adoption of findings.

Funding Application Review

We request that applicants submit a one-page letter of intent. Letters are reviewed by leadership members of the administrative, developmental, and translational cores, and selected applicants are then asked to submit a full application, including a research proposal.

The submitted research proposal is reviewed by one expert within NYU or NYU Langone and two external reviewers. Reviewers follow National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant review guidelines to evaluate and score the proposals. In addition, reviewers comment on the potential of the applications to obtain future intramural funding.

Upon receipt of the reviewers’ critiques, an ad hoc committee consisting of center leadership discusses the proposals in an NIH study section-like meeting and makes funding decisions. Criteria for funding include overall impact score, potential to obtain extramural funding, and the relevance of the proposal to National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) goals and our center’s strategic growth plan.

The next cycle for applications will begin in fall of 2023. Learn more about the application process.
