Tailoring a Health Coaching Intervention to Improve Weight Within a Latino Population

In this study, researchers in the MOTIVATE Research Lab propose to translate and tailor the Goals for Eating and Moving (GEM) intervention to meet the needs of a Latino population at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue. Using a think-aloud protocol, a method used to gather usability data on software and tech applications, we will assess the acceptability of a translated version of the GEM tablet-based coaching tool in a small sample of patients from Bellevue. This tool, that we developed, assesses patients’ current health behaviors, generates personalized advice and handouts, and helps patients to set initial nutrition and physical activity goals. After a round of usability testing of the GEM tool, we will translate the tool and the goal-setting and patient education materials. Finally, we will explore the feasibility of the tailored GEM intervention by piloting the health coaching visit with a small sample of Latino patients from Bellevue.

Specific Aims

  • tailor the GEM online tool and health coaching materials for English- and Spanish-speaking Latino patients at an urban public primary care clinic
  • test the usability of the tailored GEM tool
  • determine the feasibility, acceptability, and process outcomes of the tailored GEM intervention with Latino patients at an urban public clinic
