Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care & Pain Medicine Training for Medical Students

The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine provides a variety of training programs to medical students. Overseen by Kenneth M. Sutin, MD, director of medical student education, opportunities include shadowing, research, electives, and an advisory program for residency application.

Our training occurs at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, the Center for the Study and Treatment of Pain, and NYC + Health Hospitals/Bellevue, providing students with exposure to a wide diversity of anesthesiology cases.

Anesthesiology Interest Group

First- and second-year medical students are encouraged to participate in our anesthesiology interest group. Students meet about four times a year and hold workshops on topics such as airway management.

Shadowing and Preceptorship Opportunities

Medical students in their first and second years have the opportunity to shadow an attending anesthesiologist for a day or more to observe procedures and patient care.

Third- and fourth-year medical students can participate in a preceptorship, in which they shadow an attending anesthesiologists for two to four weeks. Learn more about applying for a preceptorship.

Research Opportunities and Concentrations

First- and second-year students can work with a mentor in our department on basic or clinical research projects. Mentors are matched with students based on a mutual area of interest.

Fourth-year medical students can elect to participate in a 12-week research concentration or a combination 8-week research and 4-week clinical concentration in anesthesiology. Concentrations are part of our MD curriculum.

Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Electives

The Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine welcomes medical students from NYU Grossman School of Medicine and visiting students to participate in our electives.

Third- and fourth-year medical students can participate in a two- or four-week Anesthesiology Elective, which provides them with exposure to general anesthesiology or to subspecialties such as obstetric, neurosurgical, and pediatric anesthesiology.

A two-week Pain Medicine Elective familiarizes medical students with acute and chronic pain pathologies in inpatient and outpatient settings. The elective is open to third- and fourth-year students.

Medical Student Advisory Program

An anesthesiology faculty advisor guides medical students through the residency selection and application process. Our anesthesiology, perioperative care, and pain medicine residents may offer additional guidance.

Accelerated Three-Year MD Pathway

Each year, one student from NYU Grossman School of Medicine may be selected to participate in an accelerated three-year MD pathway that leads to conditional acceptance to the Anesthesiology, Perioperative Care, and Pain Medicine Residency.
