Accelerated Three-Year MD Direct Progression to an NYU Grossman School of Medicine Residency

Direct Progression to an NYU Grossman School of Medicine Residency

Traditionally, students spend much of the fourth year of medical school taking electives to determine which residency to pursue and then applying for residencies. NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s three-year MD degree pathway is designed to provide students who have already decided on a career path accelerated entry into a variety of medical specialties.

If you are a candidate for admission to NYU Grossman School of Medicine, you can apply to the three-year MD pathway when you apply to the MD program. You can also opt in to the three-year pathway just before the end of either your second or third year of medical school. Accepted students directly progress into any one of the following twenty-one residencies:

Upon meeting the academic and professional standards for graduation from medical school, you will be ranked to match into an NYU Grossman School of Medicine residency program through the National Resident Matching Program®. Should you choose to rank us, you would match into a position at NYU Grossman School of Medicine for residency.

Applying to the three-year program requires an additional application with essays that explain your choice for a particular residency. Residency program directors review submitted materials and decide which candidates to interview. You are notified of your acceptance as soon as possible.

Although you don’t begin your residency until after the third year of training, you gain early access to potential mentors through rotations and electives in your designated specialty. This facilitates your transition from undergraduate medical school to graduate residency training.

You must meet academic and professional standards and participate in the National Resident Matching Program to finalize your placement in a specific residency program.

Changing Residencies and Applying to Outside Programs

If your career interests change during your time in medical school, our flexible curriculum can accommodate your priorities. If positions are still available in the residency program you would like to switch to, you may be able to make the change and remain in the three-year MD program. If not, you can complete our MD curriculum in the traditional four-year time span.

As a three-year MD student, you begin residency training at the NYU Langone Health residency program of your choice after participating in The Match®. Alternatively, you are free to interview with and rank residency programs at other institutions.
