Belonging at NYU Grossman School of Medicine

Diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) are core values of NYU Grossman School of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program. We strive to live by these principles each day in our education, research, and practice of medicine. Diverse communities promote innovation in research and more equitable and accessible healthcare. Diverse communities are also just. Our program seeks to foster a diverse community of belonging. As a school in New York City, we have an obligation to support, engage with, and better our community from our location on First Avenue to all five boroughs. We believe that DEIB is a crucial part of being a physician–scientist and live out this commitment with community outreach through the Research Immersion Summer Experience for Underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) Physician Scientists (RISE UP) pathway program for high school students, research discussions through our DEIB Journal Club, and serving patients regardless of their health insurance status at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, the oldest public hospital in the country.

We are proud of the diversity of our students, faculty, staff, and leadership, but acknowledge that we still have areas for growth. We dedicate ourselves to annually reassessing our DEIB efforts and resources through student surveys and program-wide discussions, redoubling our areas of strength and striving for progress in our areas of weakness. We are committed to DEIB for our community members and prospective community members.

Student Groups

Our NYU Grossman School of Medicine student groups provide an opportunity for students to work with their peers outside of the lab and develop connections with fellow students. These groups enable students to build community and belonging with those of diverse and similar backgrounds and interests.

Qties

Medical Scientist Training Program LGBTQ+ties (Qties) is an affinity group within NYU Grossman School of Medicine that centers, elevates, and celebrates the experiences of physician–scientist trainees with diversity in sexual orientation and gender identity. We aim to foster spaces that both promote bonding and resiliency within the LGBTQIA2S+ community as well as those in which the entire Medical Scientist Training Program is welcome to showcase how our queer identities contribute to and strengthen our role as medical and graduate students.

Women of MSTP x NYU (WoMxN)

Women of MSTP x NYU (WoMxN) is a community built on empowerment and support. Our mission is to support women MD/PhD students in addressing specific challenges faced by women as an underrepresented group along the career path, from applicant to student to physician–scientist. Events include lunch sessions with invited women physician–scientist speakers, workshops where we discuss current and potential career obstacles unique to women and that affect women differently than men, wellness-bonding workouts around New York City, and more. Sessions are open to all students because we recognize that “women’s issues” often affect men as well, and that both men and women are invested in working to change gender inequality.

DEIB Journal Club

The DEIB Journal Club brings together current and prospective Medical Science Training Program students and interested faculty to discuss journal articles related to DEIB in academic medicine, research, and education. Participants read an article for each meeting and then participate in a facilitated discussion about the article. This club deepens participants’ knowledge of social determinants of health and health equity and builds community amongst students at different stages of the academic program.
