Radiation Oncology Medical Student Training

NYU Langone’s Department of Radiation Oncology offers two- and four-week electives in the fundamentals of radiation oncology for medical students.

These electives give medical students experience in a wide variety of clinical cases as they work with faculty and residents at two different locations in New York City: NYU Langone’s Perlmutter Cancer Center and Tisch Hospital.

Two-Week Medical Student Elective

The two-week elective is offered to fourth-year NYU Grossman School of Medicine students who have completed their medicine and surgery clerkships.

To apply, please refer to the elective course dates for two-week blocks or contact NYU Langone’s Office of Registration and Student Records.

Four-Week Medical Student Elective

Our four-week elective is available to all NYU Grossman School of Medicine students, as well as visiting MD students. During your rotation, you are expected to participate in initial patient evaluations, diagnosis, discussion of treatment options, and planning and delivery of radiation therapy.

You also have the opportunity to attend didactic sessions, departmental conferences, and multidisciplinary tumor boards. At the end of the four-week elective, each student delivers a 30-minute presentation on a radiation- or cancer-related topic to the department.

Visiting MD Students

We offer a two-week virtual elective to visiting MD students who have completed their medicine and surgery clerkships.

During your rotation, you are expected to participate in initial patient evaluations, diagnosis, discussion of treatment options, and radiation treatment planning (i.e., contouring).

You also have the opportunity to attend didactic sessions, departmental conferences, and multidisciplinary tumor boards. At the end of the two-week elective, each student delivers a 30-minute presentation on a radiation- or cancer-related topic to the department.

To apply for the two-week virtual elective, please submit your CV and desired elective course dates to the program coordinator.

If your preferred elective dates are available, you must submit a completed visiting student elective application and other required materials to the program coordinator six weeks before the elective start date.

For more information about elective dates and the application process, please contact Emily Rawn, program coordinator, at emily.rawn@nyulangone.org or 646-501-8959.
