The Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology at NYU Langone Health uses advanced imaging technologies and tools to perform minimally invasive procedures to treat a wide range of disease. Our division is composed of fellowship-trained vascular and interventional radiologists, as well as highly trained advanced practitioners, nurses, and technologists.

Researchers in our division conduct vascular and interventional radiology research on emerging minimally invasive image-guided therapies. Our faculty publish in leading medical journals and speak at national and international vascular and interventional radiology meetings, including those of the Society of Interventional Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society, and the American College of Radiology.

Vascular and Interventional Radiology Education

We offer training opportunities for medical students and radiology residents to learn the latest vascular and image-guided interventional radiology procedures. Through our affiliation with NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, physicians who train in our division gain experience across a wide spectrum of disease states in a variety of clinical settings.

Our trainees actively participate in grand rounds, tumor boards, educational seminars, and local and national vascular and interventional radiology conferences.

Interventional Radiology Training for Residents

We offer two options for physicians interested in advanced radiology training, an Integrated Interventional Radiology Residency and an Independent Interventional Radiology Residency.

Our radiology residents work with specialty-trained vascular and interventional radiologists at Tisch Hospital, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, Bellevue, and the VA NY Harbor Healthcare System, and gain experience across a wide spectrum of disease states in a variety of clinical settings.

Interventional radiology residents are strongly encouraged to participate in research. We provide support for institutional review board applications, statistical analyses, grant submissions, and research and clinical trial coordination.

At the start of each academic year, residents attend research meetings to learn about research projects in the division and meet with potential research mentors. After selecting a project and mentor, and as your research progresses, you are encouraged to submit abstracts for national and international meetings and manuscripts for publication.

Our residents routinely present work at meetings of the Society of Interventional Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the American College of Radiology, and others.

Vascular and Interventional Radiology Training for Medical Students

As part of the MD curriculum at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, medical students with an interest in vascular and interventional radiology have the opportunity to spend time on the radiology service during the radiology selective and a vascular and interventional radiology elective. During these experiences, medical students observe and can participate in image-guided procedures and take part in formal training with the attending radiologist. Medical students can also collaborate on hypothesis-driven clinical research with dedicated vascular and interventional radiology faculty mentors as part of the radiology research elective.

Vascular and Interventional Radiology Research

We investigate emerging minimally invasive image-guided therapies, conduct prospective and retrospective clinical trials, and serve as research mentors for residents and medical students.

Areas of research interest include interventional oncology, image-guided procedures for women’s and men’s health conditions, venous thromboembolism, hepatobiliary interventions, quality and patient safety, treatments for portal hypertension, genicular artery embolization for knee osteoarthritis and hemarthrosis, and artificial intelligence in the field of radiology.

We use state-of-the-art clinical and research technology to support our research endeavors. Investigators have access to a picture archiving and communications system, or PACS, a type of secure technology that healthcare providers use to access and transmit electronic versions of medical images; a fully integrated electronic medical system that can be mined for large-data analysis; and electronic data collection tools.

Two dedicated research centers, the NYU Langone Radiology—Center for Biomedical Imaging and Center for Advanced Imaging Innovation and Research, provide access to diverse, multidisciplinary work environments and flexible workspaces, multimedia equipment, classrooms, dedicated servers and databases, and secure storage for medical research records. Clinical research takes place at NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital and Kimmel Pavilion, NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, and NYU Langone Orthopedic Hospital.

Research Meetings

We host monthly vascular and interventional radiology research meetings for mentors, trainees, and medical students to become familiar with research projects within the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology. During the first research meeting of the academic year, researchers who are new to the division identify a research topic of interest and a research mentor.

Throughout the year, researchers present their work and discuss ongoing projects and new ideas. We also offer periodic training sessions to introduce various tools available to our research community and on topics related to the conduct of research, such as basic statistics or how to design a project.

Research Internships

Several vascular and interventional radiology research internships are available through NYU Langone’s nontraditional volunteer program, also called the NTV program. Research interns can choose to work on existing interventional radiology research projects or initiate a new project in collaboration with clinical or nonclinical NYU Langone researchers.

You are also expected to participate in weekly didactic educational conferences and monthly research meetings to learn the latest interventional radiology techniques and meet world-renowned interventional radiologists.

The goal is to provide an introduction to research methodology in vascular and interventional radiology and encourage careers in the field. As part of the internship, you are required to write a quarterly progress report, participate in data collection, write manuscripts, and present abstracts at national vascular and interventional radiology meetings.

Ideal candidates are medical students (typically between years three and four of training), medical school graduates, and radiology or interventional radiology residents who have an interest in medical imaging and interventional radiology techniques. A minimum commitment of three months is required.

Honors and Awards

Faculty, residents, and fellows in the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology are leaders in their academic discipline and belong to a community with a proud tradition of pioneering innovations in minimally invasive image-guided therapies.

In the past, our division has received the Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award from the Radiological Society of North America, which recognizes outstanding residents and fellows who have advanced radiologic research, and the SIR Foundation Resident/Fellow Research Award, which provides residents and fellows with funding to attend and present research at the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting.

Vascular and Interventional Radiology Clinical Services

As part of NYU Langone’s nationally renowned Department of Radiology, our division provides interventional radiology services at NYU Langone Radiology—Tisch Hospital and at our outpatient imaging center, NYU Langone Radiology—32nd Street.

Our team offers a wide range of clinical services. The interventional oncology service provides embolization for liver cancers and liver metastases, as well as ablation therapy for non-small cell lung cancer, kidney cancer, liver cancer, and soft tissue cancers. We are actively involved in the management of complications related to portal hypertension, which includes high volumes of balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (BTRO) and transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement.

Other areas of expertise include treatments for vascular diseases, such as interventions for chronic venous insufficiency and lower extremity arterial disease, as well as deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism.

We also perform a large volume of outpatient procedures, including prostate artery embolization for male urinary dysfunction and uterine artery embolization for fibroids. Additional embolization procedures include varicocele embolization for male infertility, gonadal vein embolization for pelvic congestion syndrome, renal AML embolization, and peripheral and pulmonary arteriovenous malformation embolization.
