NYU Langone Health offers a one-year Critical Care Pharmacy Residency program with an intensive individualized inpatient experience. This postgraduate year two (PGY-2) program provides residents with the training necessary to develop clinical expertise in critical care pharmacotherapy. Core rotations in a variety of intensive care environments allow you to advance your knowledge in the different aspects of critical care pharmacotherapy and develop clinical skills.

Additional rotations include cardiovascular intensive care, neurosurgical intensive care, and infectious diseases. Longitudinal involvement with NYU Langone’s Intensive Care Oversight Group and completion of a research project are also required. As a resident, you have a broad range of clinical and research opportunities and the flexibility to integrate your professional goals. Our program equips you with the knowledge and experience to be a competent critical care practitioner.

Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Curriculum

The PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency curriculum consists of the following requirements, including core rotations.

Orientation/Pharmacy Operations: 2 weeks (omitted for NYU Langone Health PGY-1 who early commit to PGY-2 spot)
Medical Intensive Care I: 4–6 weeks
Surgical Intensive Care: 4 weeks
Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit: 4 weeks
Cardiothoracic Surgery Intensive Care Unit: 4 weeks
Heart Transplant or Lung Transplant: 4 weeks
Pediatric or Neonatal Intensive Care: 4 weeks
Neurosurgical Intensive Care: 4 weeks
Medical Intensive Care II: 4 weeks
Research: 4 weeks
Electives: 8–12 weeks

Elective Rotations

Residents may choose from Emergency Medicine, Infectious Diseases Consult, Bone Marrow Transplant, Congenital Cardiovascular Care Unit, Thoracic Transplant, or they may repeat any of the above rotations as electives.

Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Research Requirements

Residents must complete a scholarly research project in critical care. You are encouraged to choose a topic of interest that contributes to the advancement of critical care pharmacotherapy.

You must also complete a review article or a patient case report for publication and will participate in the continuing education efforts of our program.

Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Longitudinal Experiences

Residents have the following longitudinal responsibilities:

• a required scholarly research project, the results of which are presented at a regional pharmacy conference and submitted to a national critical care meeting
• clinical in-house coverage on rotating weekends
• participation in a critical care medication use evaluation
• medical emergency response pager coverage
• critical care management longitudinal rotation
• experiential precepting

Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Stipend and Benefits

Residents receive a stipend of $60,000, as well as comprehensive health insurance, 14 vacation days, and 7 professional meeting days.

Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Eligibility Requirements

Applicants to our Critical Care Pharmacy Residency program must possess a PharmD degree from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE)–accredited college or school of pharmacy. You must also have completed a PGY-1 Pharmacy Practice Residency and be licensed or eligible for licensure in New York state.

Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Application Process

We offer one PGY-2 position per year. Applicants must submit their application through Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS) and participate in the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Resident Matching Program. The resident matching program code is 691852.

Applicants must submit the following application materials through PhORCAS by January 5:

• all official college transcripts
• your CV
• three references submitted through the reference form in PhORCAS
• a letter of intent that describes your goals and interests, motivation for completing a PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency, and why you want to be a part of NYU Langone

An interview (in-person or virtual) is required and will include a patient case presentation.

The start date for the program is July 1.
