Analytical Chemistry Core

NYU Langone's Analytical Chemistry Core provides metals and elemental analysis of environmentally, experimentally, or pharmacologically exposed cells and tissues. We also analyze other biological and environmental samples.

As a researcher, you can access our sophisticated spectroscopy laboratories to evaluate samples for the presence of toxic metals including arsenic, chromium, cadmium, nickel, mercury, and lead. You can also analyze samples for environmental or experimental atmospheric metals and elements including sulfur, zinc, silica, iron, and cesium, or for pharmacological, therapeutic, and clinical metals and elements such as platinum, arsenic, silver, gold, aluminum, copper, and titanium.

Our metals analysis laboratory features advanced X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). These technologies provide quantitative data on metals and elemental levels in cells, tissues, and other biological and environmental samples, with a dynamic range of detection. In our laboratories, lower detection limits of this new equipment far exceed those previously achievable.

We also offer consultative services to NYU Langone investigators specializing in physical and inorganic chemistry related to metals and elemental analysis of biological tissues. Samples may include those from experimental animals; human clinical samples of urine, blood serum, buccal cells, and tissues; environmental samples of atmospheric aerosols; contaminated water; and stored World Trade Center dust samples.

Additionally, we train students and researchers in the use, application, and analysis of XRF and ICP-MS.
