Obstetrics & Gynecology Medical Student Education

Welcome to NYU Langone’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This is an especially rewarding and diverse field of medicine. Our medical student curriculum, led by Mahino A. Talib, MD, and supported by Johana D. Oviedo, MD, MPH, program associate director, provides in-depth, hands-on experiences across all related subspecialties, including general obstetrics and gynecology, maternal–fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, urogynecology, reproductive endocrinology and infertility, minimally invasive gynecologic surgery, and family planning, among others.

The medical student experience extends far beyond the obstetrics and gynecology clerkship. We offer a summer fellowship for rising second-year students interested in early exposure to obstetrics and gynecology. In addition, we offer electives for both NYU Grossman School of Medicine students and visiting fourth-year students.

Our overall mission is to foster a nurturing environment that allows medical students to gain the skills and experiences they need to excel in their future careers as physicians. We pride ourselves on promoting wellness in education and are fortunate to have faculty and residents who dedicate themselves to improving student education.

We believe that every clinical activity contains an opportunity to learn. Our students have the privilege of sharing in some of the most intimate aspects of patients’ lives. We look forward to having you join our compassionate and dedicated group of doctors-in-training.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Medical Student Clerkship

Our medical student clerkship is a six-week program that includes direct patient care in inpatient and outpatient settings; lectures designed to provide a solid background in obstetric and gynecologic science; and teaching sessions with faculty, fellows, and residents. Our clinical clerkship and research opportunities take advantage of the obstetric and gynecologic services at NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, NYU Langone’s Tisch Hospital, and NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn.

For more information, please contact Angela Sarkisyan, clerkship coordinator, at angela.sarkisyan@nyulangone.org. Current students can log into Brightspace to learn more (Kerberos ID and password required).

Obstetrics and Gynecology Electives for NYU Grossman School of Medicine Students

Our department offers several electives for students at NYU Grossman School of Medicine, ranging from a crash course in obstetrics and gynecology to classes in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery. For more details on course offerings, see the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Elective Catalog.

Research and Clinical Shadowing Experiences

We offer opportunities for research or clinical shadowing with our department faculty to interested medical students. For more information, please contact Dr. Talib at mahino.talib@nyulangone.org.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Medical Student Interest Group

The Obstetrics and Gynecology Medical Student Interest Group facilitates a better understanding of the field and its subspecialties through professional contacts, exposure to clinical experiences, and an accurate representation of the daily lives of obstetricians and gynecologists.

We introduce obstetrics and gynecology as a career option to students early in their medical education and help them see the variety of professional paths open to them through panel discussions and guest speakers. We provide opportunities for direct learning through clinical shadowing. Our faculty members are also available to mentor students interested in this specialty. Veleka Willis, MD is the faculty advisor for the group.

For further information, please contact interest group leader Calder Hollond at calder.hollond@nyulangone.org.
