Description

An elective program for 3rd and 4th year medical students is available in the Geriatrics division for a one month rotation.

Clinical experiences will be in diverse environments in order to better understand the management of the older adult. Students will rotate through the outpatient experiences in the geriatrics clinic at Bellevue and the VA Hospitals where they will see patients autonomously (precepted by attending), inpatient consult service at Tisch Hospital with the Geriatrics fellow, attending, and Nurse Practitioner, nursing home and rehabilitation at Gouverneur Health with a fellow, and perform home visits in the area with a fellow and Nurse Practitioner.

Students will participate in the fellows’ weekly didactic conferences.

Objectives of the Elective

The student will be exposed to the clinical problems of the older patient In the inpatient, outpatient, long term care, and home settings. At the end of a one month rotation, a student would be able to perform geriatric assessments, and begin to institute a management plan for common geriatric issues (eg. hypertension and diabetes, dementia, delirium, polypharmacy, urinary incontinence, dizziness, falls, pressure ulcers, and sensory impairment). Students will understand the role of the various members of the interdisciplinary care team. The students will also begin to understand the importance of various services such as visiting nurse and home health care. Students will appreciate the non-medical issues (psychosocial) in caring for the older patients, and will develop greater comfort in discussing goals of care and advanced directives with patients.

Key Responsibilities of the student while on Elective

Students will be required to see patients in the geriatric clinic and attend weekly conferences including Journal Club and Geriatrics Grand Rounds.

Didactic Program

The students will get a short syllabus of recommended articles from faculty, and will become familiar with pogoe.org, a Geriatrics self-study learning site.

Method of Evaluation

All cases seen by the students are presented to an attending preceptor who then goes over the case and sees the patient with the student.
