Since the time of recruitment, research of the NYU Women’s Health Study
has expanded to include other diseases besides breast cancer. Investigators of
the NYU Women’s Health Study have conducted numerous projects that examine
factors affecting the development of various cancers and other chronic diseases.
While some of these projects confirm preliminary findings, many others provide
novel and groundbreaking results.
Women’s Health Study researchers are continually preparing for additional
projects. Ongoing projects include a study of endogenous estrogen levels in postmenopausal
women and risk of coronary heart disease, as well as studies of the effects of
estrogens found in plants (called phytoestrogens) on the risk of breast and endometrial
(uterine) cancer. In the future, there are plans to study the effects of physical
activity and genetic variations on the development of breast cancer, endometrial
cancer and osteoporosis.
