Speech Therapy

Speech therapy is often prescribed for patients with certain voice disorders. It is a form of treatment that analyzes the way patient uses his/her voice, and attempts to correct abnormal speech patterns. These abnormal patterns promote worsening or prevent resolution of certain conditions that may affect the voice. Elimination of these may help to cure the disorder.

Speech therapy may be the only treatment necessary for certain abnormalities or may be used in conjunction with other therapy. Therapy may involve just a single session or may be ongoing, depending on the patient's response. It is important to recognize that singing and speaking involve two different techniques, and therefore singing lessons or training may not improve a person’s speaking voice. Although effective in certain disorders, speech therapy is not useful for all problems. Your doctor will discuss with you whether or not speech therapy will benefit your individual problem.
