Your doctor will use one of several methods to view your larynx and evaluate your voice problem. Specific methods used are customized to the needs of each patient.

Flexible Fiberoptic Laryngoscopy
Insertion of a thin flexible endoscope containing fiberoptic cable through the nose and into the throat, allowing examination of all areas of the throat and evaluation of vocal cord motion.

Laryngeal Electromyography (LEMG)
Examination of the motor activity of the tiny muscles that control the vocal cords. Allows the physician to make an earlier prediction of the permanence of vocal cord paralysis.

pH Testing
Designed to evaluate patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease and laryngopharyngeal reflux disease. Monitors acid exposure within the esophagus and voice box.

Rigid Transoral Laryngoscopy
Insertion of a rigid endoscope into the back of the mouth to obtain a magnified view of the vocal cords with high image quality.

Speech Therapy
Treatment method that analyzes the way patient uses his/her voice and attempts to correct abnormal speech patterns.

Stroboscopy
Use of a strobe light to measure vibrations of the vocal cords and record frequency of the voice.

Voice Evaluation
A series of tests designed to analyze the voice and help determine what is wrong. Typically involves a voice recording run through a series of computer analysis programs.
