Barium Swallow

Example of Barium Swallow Test showing mild narrowing in the mid-esophagus.

The barium swallow test is a useful screening test for a variety of problems which may affect the throat and esophagus. The test utilizes x-rays to evaluate the swallowing mechanism. The test is administered by having the patient either sit in a chair or lay down and swallow a chalky substance (barium). During the swallowing, an x-ray is taken of the mouth, neck, and chest. The barium shows up very bright on the x-ray, and outlines the structures involved in the swallowing process. The examination may demonstrate abnormalities in the swallowing mechanism or in the structures of the digestive tract.

As mentioned the examination is primarily useful as a screening test. Typically it is used to screen the esophagus for irregularities that may indicate chronic irritation or for the presence of growths or other abnormalities. If abnormalities show up on a barium swallow, further testing, including transnasal esophagoscopy, may need to be performed to further evaluate the problem.
