Office-Based Biopsy
Frequently, when patients are diagnosed with lesions in the throat, it is recommended that they undergo a biopsy. Because of the location of the lesion, the biopsy typically is done in the operating room with a general anesthetic. While the biopsy is usually fairly straightforward, the patient takes certain risks associated with the anesthesia.
At the NYU Voice Center, we have developed an office-based approach to biopsy of these lesions. Typically, most lesions can be biopsied in less than 15 minutes with the use of topical anesthetic alone. These procedures are done in the office, saving the hassle of a trip to the operating room. Also, because general anesthesia or sedation is not required, patients can typically return to work or school the same day.
There are several techniques that are used at the NYU Voice Center for biopsy of these lesions, depending on the individual situation. These techniques include: EndoCdx brush biopsy, endoscopic cups forceps biopsy, and transoral biopsy. Each of these techniques has its relative advantages and disadvantages, and the details should be discussed with you by your doctor.
