Hydration

Your body needs an adequate amount of fluid in order to function properly. The average adult that is physically inactive requires about 2 liters of fluid a day just to compensate for production of urine, sweat, and humidification lost in the air you breath, when you talk and when you sing. More physically active people--including singers--require even more fluid.

Hydration is important for good voice quality, in addition to nasal and sinus maintenance. Your paranasal sinuses produce about 1 liter of mucus a day, and the glands for your mouth produce about 1 liter of saliva a day. When you have poor hydration the mucus and saliva becomes "thicker" and does not flow as well. This stagnant mucus predisposes to sinus infections, and a sensation of dryness in the nose, mouth, throat and voice.

Drinking eight to ten glasses of water is usually recommended each day. Some of your required fluid is also consumed in solid foods, but it is important to drink an adequate amount of fluid to stay hydrated. Certain medical conditions such as heart failure, high blood pressure and renal failure require careful fluid management, and this subject should be discussed with your primary physician before any major dietary and lifestyle change. Caffeine and alcohol should be reduced or avoided since they both acts as "diuretics," reducing your body's fluid and causing dryness.

You may also help liquefy and hydrate your mucus with nasal saline spray (salt water spray for the nose). Some brands include "Ocean," "Ayr," and "Deep Sea." This may be used as often as you like, but it is usually recommended to use it at least three to four times a day. One convenient way to remember is to use it each time you go to the restroom. Be sure to gently place it towards the front of the nostril, and not towards the middle or deep inside the nose. If you get any pain or nosebleeds you should discontinue use and call your physician.

Since most Americans spend over 90% of their time indoors, dry air from air conditioning and heaters tends to dry your secretions. A humidifier in the bedroom is helpful in humidifying the air, particularly in winter and summer months. You only need to use the humidifier during sleeping hours so the humidity does not exceed 50%. Otherwise fungus and mold may grow and cause other problems. A barometer may be used to help you monitor your bedroom's humidity.
