Potential Clinical Role of Virtual Colonoscopy
Currently there are several clinical situations in which virtual colonoscopy may play an important role in the evaluation of patients' colons. These include evaluation of the colon after an incomplete conventional colonoscopic examination or evaluation of the colon near an obstructing growth (47, 48, 49). Another potential use for virtual colonoscopy is evaluation of the colon in patients who are clinically unfit for conventional colonoscopy, such as those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, patients with a bleeding disorder or those on coumadin, and patients who have previously had an allergic reaction to sedation. Finally, in the future, virtual colonoscopy may contribute to colorectal screening by providing a safe, effective, and rapid examination that evaluates the entire colon.
