Vascular & Endovascular Research & Clinical Trials

Our faculty members conduct research that advances the field and innovates surgical tools and techniques, all with the goal of providing excellent vascular care for our patients. We participate in many arterial and venous trials, and partner with industrial research and development initiatives.

NYU Langone is a participant in the Society for Vascular Surgery Vascular Quality Initiative, which enables us to increase the quality, effectiveness, and safety of vascular and endovascular surgery at our own patient facilities and at hospitals around the nation.

Areas of Research

Our division’s current areas of research include National Institutes of Health (NIH)–funded studies as well as investigations of new techniques and technologies.

Carotid Endarterectomy in a City Hospital Population

We are evaluating New York City public hospital patients with carotid artery stenosis to determine whether extensive cardiac evaluations are necessary before carotid surgery.

Carotid Stenting

Our faculty are investigating new technologies for the treatment of carotid artery stenosis, including carotid artery stenting and clinical trials for an arterial filter to reduce the risk of stroke.

Congenital Vascular Malformations

Our worldwide expertise in multidisciplinary research and treatment of congenital vascular anomalies is leading to new plastic surgery and endovascular approaches.

Endovascular Surgery Research

The convergence of advanced imaging and endovascular surgery has revolutionized care for patients with vascular disease. Experts at NYU Langone currently perform more endovascular reconstructions than at any other hospital in the country.

Improving Outcomes of Carotid Endarterectomy

This NIH-funded study is using data from all New York state hospitals to analyze the outcomes of carotid endarterectomy and to identify factors responsible for the rare complications involved with this procedure.

Limb Salvage Through Angiogenesis

Faculty in our division are using angiogenesis techniques to prompt the body to heal arterial insufficiency on demand by growing new blood vessels to replace blocked and narrowed ones, thus lessening the chance of amputation.

Minimally Invasive Varicose Vein Surgery

Our team is examining two minimally invasive varicose vein treatment techniques: vascular closure using radio waves and scope-based technology to remove varicose veins without surgical incisions.

Magnetic Resonance Angiography for Treatment of Lower Extremity Arterial Occlusive Disease

We are currently evaluating a noninvasive magnetic resonance angiography technique to replace invasive angiography to direct treatment of lower extremity artery disease.

Multidisciplinary Treatment of Visceral Artery Pseudoaneurysms

Faculty are investigating the use of covered stents to treat visceral artery pseudo aneurysms without surgical incision.

Stent Grafts for Repair of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm

Our team is evaluating the Excluder® endograft, an innovative stent used to repair abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Vascular Quality Initiative

NYU Langone participates in the Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) Vascular Quality Initiative (VQI), which aims to improve quality, safety, effectiveness, and cost of vascular healthcare by allowing hospitals to share data and set benchmarks for these variables.

For each adult at NYU Langone who has an open or endovascular procedure, our division collects and submits demographic, clinical, procedural, and outcomes data. Hospitals nationwide and in Canada submit their own data, which is aggregated and audited and made available to physicians and hospitals, allowing for anonymous risk-adjusted benchmarking.

Our participation in the VQI has numerous benefits, both for NYU Langone and the field, including the following:

  • significant improvement in the quality of care, reducing the number of complications and costs
  • identification of risks and development of best practices and plans for quality improvement
  • access to clinically detailed data about device performance

Clinical Trials

Faculty in our division, often in collaboration with our colleagues in other NYU Langone divisions and departments, actively conduct clinical trials that investigate new surgical tools and techniques as well as treatments for vascular conditions.
