Many medical students and physicians like to think that being a health professional protects them in some way from illness and this trend may be even stronger with respect to mental health. It takes real courage to admit that strategies from the past no longer work as they did in the past. We offer these services to address exactly what troubles medical students because we know that getting help lead to improved feelings, function and outcome.
Dr. Chap Attwell is the consulting psychiatrist to Student Health. He has absolutely no connection whatsoever to your clinical training and does not teach or evaluate any medical student professionally. He has no formal contact with the Dean’s Office and holds all communications strictly confidential with the exception of life-threatening emergencies or routine matters related to coordination with the Student Health Service staff. Dr. Attwell provides a routine consultation, which is usually a series of three to five visits, courtesy of the Student Health Service. After that time a longer-term treatment may or may not be recommended. He will assist the student in making a referral tailored to meet the student’s individual needs.
Dr. Attwell sees students by appointment in Student Health. Routine appointments can be scheduled by calling 212-263-5489. For any after hours matter or for emergency mental health care, contact Dr. Attwell directly at his private office at 212-570-1933.
