The student health insurance through United HealthCare and the Student Health Center do not provide specific dental services. However, the Student Health Center is available for referrals. The two main dental-care options for NYU School of Medicine students are (1) the Cigna Dental HMO Plan and (2) NYU Stu-Dent, through the NYU College of Dentistry. Details about the Cigna Dental HMO option for the 2007-2008 academic year ( 9/1/2007 – 8/31/2008) are described below:
NYU School of Medicine offers medical students the opportunity to purchase dental coverage at a group rate through Cigna Dental HMO.
Cigna DHMO offers:
- Comprehensive and affordable dental coverage for you and your eligible dependent(s)
- Access to an extensive network of dentists that participate with Cigna DHMO ( Please note that this plan does not cover any services provided by a non-network dentist. )
- User-friendly website that can be accessed at your convenience
Elect Dental Insurance for you and your eligible dependents for the upcoming academic year (2007-2008) now until Monday, September 10, 2007 . To help you better understand the dental plan and its features, see the Cigna fee schedules 2007 fee schedule and 2008 fee schedule , which outlines the co-pays that would be your out-of-pocket expense based on the type of service utilized, and a Cigna informational flyer that provides further information on the plan.
The annual cost for coverage is as follows:
* Student-Only Coverage: $204.04 for the entire 2007-2008 academic year
* Family Coverage: $402.12 for the entire 2007-2008 academic year (Enroll yourself, your spouse or domestic partner and/or eligible child(ren) under this option)
Enrolling for Dental Coverage
The enrollment period is only open once per year and is handled by the Benefits Services Department .
To enroll you must complete and return the Cigna Dental Enrollment Form with full payment, in person, by September 10, 2007 to the NYU School of Medicine Bursar/Cashier (Greenberg Hall, SC-1, Rm. 129; Hours: 9:30am-4:00pm). Checks or money orders are to be made payable to "NYU School of Medicine."
Once Coverage becomes Effective
Once enrolled, your CIGNA Dental HMO plan coverage will be in effect during the entire academic year ( 9/1/2007 through 8/31/2008 ). This means that you will not be able to drop or change your plan elections while you are enrolled in the plan, unless you experience a qualifying life event (such as marriage, birth of a child, or divorce). If you choose not to elect coverage for the 2007-2008 academic year you will have to wait until the next enrollment period/academic year to do so; which begins in the fall of 2008.
IMPORTANT NOTE TO CURRENT PLAN PARTICIPANTS
This is your annual opportunity to decide whether you'd like to elect coverage under this plan for the upcoming academic year.
If you are currently enrolled in the CIGNA Dental HMO plan for this academic year (2006-2007), your participation in the plan WILL END ON AUGUST 31, 2007 .
To continue coverage; you WILL BE REQUIRED TO RE-ENROLL IN THE PLAN (by following the enrollment instructions above) in order to be covered from 9/1/2007 – 8/31/2008. It's also important to review the 2008 Cigna fee schedule , to learn of your out-of-pocket responsibility for services rendered in 2008.
Once you are enrolled, you will receive a Cigna ID card to use when you go to a participating dentist.
