HIV and AIDS

Effect on my life

How Will HIV / AIDS Affect My Life?

Currently, there is no cure for HIV and AIDS.  However, it is important to understand that in most cases, it can take years from the time of infection until the development of severe disease and opportunistic infections.

Thus, early diagnosis of HIV / AIDS is extremely important!

Early diagnosis can prevent you from infecting others and early treatment with correct medication can slow the progression of the disease and prevent opportunistic infections before they occur. Because it is lifelong and eventually life-threatening, careful decisions must be made and planning for the future must be taken into consideration.

It is important to know that a woman can become pregnant and have a baby despite an HIV infection. Treating a mother during her pregnancy and treating the baby, once delivered, for the first few weeks of life, can dramatically decrease the risk of infection to the baby from 25% to <2%. Thus, it is very important to alert your health care provider and to be treated during pregnancy, if infected.
