The NYU Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is seeking HIV/AIDS-related
pilot project applications. The intent of the CFAR Developmental Awards is to
support scientific studies for one year to develop preliminary data that will
serve as the foundation for applying for peer-reviewed research applications.
The project should be identified as falling under one or
more of the five CFAR program areas: Developmental Therapeutics; HIV-Associated
Diseases; Epidemiology, Transmission and Prevention; Vaccine Development; and
Viral Pathogenesis.
The primary criteria for funding of these awards are:

Quality of the science proposed;

Potential of the applicant to acquire future independent
funding for the project;

Potential of senior post-doc applicants to develop
into faculty members at NYU;
-
Recruitment to AIDS research of established investigators
who have not previously received R01-type awards in AIDS research;

Encouragement of new collaborations among the faculty
on AIDS-related projects likely to lead to
new funding opportunities;
Eligibility: This competition is open to all faculty at
NYU School of Medicine, New York University, the Public Health Research Institute
and the New York Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Eligible applicants
include senior post-docs, all faculty members, and established investigators
on the faculty new to the area of HIV and AIDS-related research. Priority will
be given to junior faculty, to individuals new to HIV/AIDS research, and to
multidisciplinary projects that demonstrate collaboration or potential for translational
findings. Previous recipients of a CFAR developmental award are not eligible
to apply for the same type of project.

Applications are to contain four sections (Strict
adherence to the page limitations is required:

Research Methodology (up to 5 pages, single spaced,
>11 point type, including specific aims, hypothesis, and research
design).

NIH Biographical Sketch (up to 2 pages including bibliography).

Budget (1 page followed by a page of budget justification,
and a statement concerning the availability of necessary equipment in a
mentor's laboratory, if a mentor is involved.).

Other Research Support-include all active, completed
and pending support for applicant, mentor and key personnel (1 page).
All requested information should be in NIH format using
PHS 398 forms (Rev. 09/04). These forms can be obtained from the Sponsored Programs

Project budgets may not exceed 12 months and $50,000 in
direct costs, and cannot include equipment. The budget period will be July 1,
2005-June 30, 2006. The review of applications will be conducted during early
June by the CFAR Scientific Review committee and awards will be made by July
15, 2005.
