PURPOSE
The purpose of the Research Bridging Support
Fund is to provide interim support for productive faculty who have
experienced, or are about to experience, a lapse in extramural grant
support. It is hoped that these funds will serve as a bridge to
a successful resubmission.
The Bridging Fund supports research activities
that will directly contribute to a more competitive grant submission,
such as:
- acquire data to meet recommendations of
extramural reviewers;
- complete work needed for the "preliminary
results" section;
- demonstrate successful use of methods, technology,
or instrumentation.
ELIGIBILITY
Full time faculty who have had an extramural,
peer-reviewed, individual research grant during the current or preceding
academic year that was not funded as a competing continuation application.
An unsuccessful second revision, e.g., an NIH
A2 application, will be considered only if there has been a significant
improvement in the score. The next application submitted to NIH
must be a new one because NIH will no longer consider any A3, or
higher, amendments.
Revised bridging applications generally will
not be considered. Prior consultation with the Office of Sponsored
Programs Administration is encouraged
(voice: 263-8822; fax: 263-8201; e-mail: grants.office@med.nyu.edu).
Applicants must provide specific plans for
a future extramural application.
SUPPORT
Bridging funds may be used for supplies, support
of technical personnel, and other research related expenses. Funds
may not be used for faculty salaries, equipment, or travel.
A maximum budget of $75,000 in direct costs
may be requested. There will be no indirect costs on bridging awards.
Funding is for one year and may not be renewed.
If an extramural award is received during the
bridging project period, the unobligated balance of the bridge award
will be returned to the Bridging Fund.
ADMINISTRATION OF THE PROGRAM
The Bridging Fund is administered by the Dean's
Office through the Office of Sponsored Programs Administration.
The program is directed by a Research Bridging Support Committee
composed of the Dean and prominent scientists of the faculty appointed
by the Dean. The committee is responsible for the review and approval
of bridging applications and policies and guidelines.
REVIEW OF APPLICATIONS
The Research Bridging Support Committee will
review all applications. Awards will be based primarily on the likelihood
of future extramural funding, as well as on scientific merit, productivity
of the principal investigator, and availability of other funds.
It is expected that applicants will submit
an extramural application during the bridging award period. The
applicant's stated plan for this submission will be considered in
the review of applications and recommendation of awards.
REQUIREMENTS OF INVESTIGATORS RECEIVING
BRIDGING AWARDS
Successful applicants will be expected to submit
a final progress report within one month of the end of the funding
period. Funds should be used within one year of receiving the award.
