Program Description
The NYU
Cancer Institute, one of 61 NCI-funded cancer centers nationwide,
is a multidisciplinary matrix cancer center with state-of-the-art
patient care and robust programs in basic, translational and clinical
research. Established basic
research programs include Cancer Epidemiology, Cancer Immunology,
Cancer Neurobiology, Molecular Carcinogenesis, Cellular Growth Control
and Stem Cell Biology. Disease-specific
programs include those focused on breast, gastrointestinal,
genitourinary, gynecologic, lung and neurological and skin cancers.
The Cancer Institute maintains a Translational
Research Task Force to foster synergies between basic and clinical
investigators. The Cancer Institute also maintains a comprehensive
repertoire of core
facilities.
Under the leadership of Steven
Burakoff, M.D., the NYU Cancer Institute is in the midst of
an unprecedented expansion. New outpatient clinical facilities have
been established including an 85,000 sq. ft. Clinical
Center located on 34th Street in Midtown Manhattan that opened
in August 2004. Our already strong basic research enterprise has
been enhanced with renovated laboratory space and prominent new
faculty recruits. Three floors of research laboratories in the Smilow
Research Center have been assigned to the NYU Cancer Institute.
A key element in our historic growth agenda will be the staffing
of these laboratories with new faculty working in the area of cancer.
Recruitment for the program is led by Mark
Philips, M.D., Deputy Director for Basic Research and Steven
Burakoff, M.D., Director of the Cancer Institute..
