Mission
The
Foundation for Research in Sleep Disorders is a non profit organization
dedicated to the advancement of research and education in sleep
disorders. Particular focus is on those disorders causing Excessive
Daytime Sleepiness. Among the most common are:
- Obstructive
Sleep Apnea Syndrome
- Pathologic
Snoring and Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome
- Narcolepsy
- Periodic
Leg Movements
- Insomnia
In
order to further its mission, the Foundation seeks to develop
funding to support both research and educational activities.
Research
Individual
research grants are considered as projects are identified. To
date, funding has been provided to support three fellowships in
sleep research. It is a goal of the foundation to develop stable
funding for an ongoing Post Doctoral (MD or PhD) Research Fellowship
in Sleep Disorders. Initially, this fellowship will be funded
for research at the NYU Sleep Disorders Center. If sufficient
funds become available, this Fellowship would be opened to competition
from other centers in the New York City area.
The
types of research supported could include (but need not be limited
to) topics in:
- Cardiopulmonary
physiology during sleep
- Improved
monitoring techniques related to sleep
- Definition
and assessment of brain dysfunction related to sleep disorders
- Improving
cost effectiveness and access to diagnostic testing
Education
The
Foundation seeks to encourage education of both medical professionals
and members of the lay public in sleep disorders. Close links
already exist with theree educational organizations. Two of these
are directly supported by the Foundation:
New
York Sleep Circle: A professional scientific organization
which has met 3 times per year since 1988 for a 3 hour evening
lecture by an invited speaker. Memebership is around 50 and
includes both MD and non-MD professionals involved in sleep
research and clinical sleep activities in the Greater NYC area.
New
York Chapter of the American Sleep Apnea Association: a
supprot group for patients with Obstructive sleep Apnea syndrome.
Northeast
Sleep Society (NESS): a regional society holding an annual
meeting for sleep professionals. The Foundation provides support
for NESS by collecting their dues and disbursing funds for the
annual meeting expenses.
