Nurturing the next generation of physician leaders at NYU Langone and ensuring that the Medical Center’s leadership reflects the diversity of the patient population it serves are the twin goals of the new Leadership Diversity Initiative, inaugurated in February 2009. One of several innovative programs to emerge recently from the Dean’s diversity council, the Leadership Diversity Initiative exemplifies the deep personal commitment to diversity across all levels on the part of Dean Grossman and such key Medical Center supporters as Kenneth Langone. The program’s eight intensive seminars were designed by NYU’s Office of Development and Learning to encourage women and minority physicians to pursue leadership roles and to give them the tools to become effective leaders. The physicians are nominated by their department chairs, who remain actively engaged in devising and updating each participant’s career development plans.
