The Rudin Medical Ethics and Humanities Fellowship is an extension of the Humanistic Medicine Program at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. The fellowship provides opportunities for students and health professionals to develop a research project on any topic related to the arts, humanities, social sciences, and bioethics with guidance from faculty.

About the Fellowship

The Rudin Foundation funds innovative research projects that explore health humanities and bioethics in practice. These interdisciplinary fields are critical in identifying, understanding, and responding to complex issues in our healthcare system.

We encourage Rudin fellows to pursue a wide scope of projects. Common overarching themes include the history of medicine; public health; literature and medicine; reflective and creative writing in medicine; the visual arts and medicine; medical education; physician wellbeing; health disparities; mental health; and end-of-life care.

Fellowship funds go toward proposals that involve original research studies, rigorous literature reviews, and creative projects. Below is a sampling of recent projects:

Rudin fellows are mentored by NYU Grossman School of Medicine and NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue faculty who have expertise in health humanities and bioethics.

The 12-month and summer Rudin Medical Ethics and Humanities Fellowships are open to all medical students. The summer program runs from June through August. Applications typically open in January of each year for both fellowships.

Rudin fellows must meet various milestones throughout the program. We encourage all fellows to produce a scholarly product, such as submitting a manuscript for publication in an academic journal or presenting research at a national conference. Our fellows receive funding for project expenses, as well as a stipend, upon satisfactory completion of fellowship criteria.

Eligibility

The Rudin Medical Ethics and Humanities Fellowship is available to NYU Grossman School of Medicine students. We do not accept outside applicants. You may not take time off to pursue the fellowship; it is completed concurrently with your other education and training.
