The Native American Mentoring Program (NAMP) at New York University School of
Medicine is an initiative of the Sackler Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences.
NAMP seeks to recruit qualified Native American students for our Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D.
and M.D. Programs. Our goal in developing this new initiative is not only to
promote Native Americans in the biological sciences at NYU, but also to serve
as a resource for scholarships, outside programs and mentoring Native American
students in this field overall. As we progress forward, we hope to develop collaborations
with many other academic institutes and national organizations too.
Our primary purpose is to assist Native American undergraduate students with knowledge
on how to prepare and apply to graduate school. NAMP is open to all students who
seek information on schools, financial aid, and what type of academic program might
be right for them. This includes advice on how to choose a school, what is needed
for admission, and/or what type of courses, research or experience is necessary to
become a physician or scientist.
In addition to student advisement, NAMP is seeking Native American professionals
who are interested in serving as mentors to Native American undergraduates. A long-range
goal of NAMP will be to refer students to Native American professionals willing to
serve as mentors in their area of interest. We welcome contact from students, faculty
and program administrators with suggestions and ideas to broaden our commitment to
assisting Native American students in graduate education.
The only requirement of NAMP is a willingness to mentor someone else once you have
achieved your own academic goals.
