Our application for the 2023–24 academic year is now open. All materials, including letters of recommendation, should be submitted by the first deadline of January 31, 2024, 5:00PM ET, for your application to be reviewed. The second and final application deadline (which requires an additional fee of $50.00) is April 15, 2024.

Successful applicants to our program have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a computational or quantitative science, such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, or engineering, or in a basic science, including biology, physics, or genetics. A background in programming is not required—students in our program take courses in and learn how to create novel computational and quantitative methods and apply them to biomedical research. Many of our students come from diverse backgrounds including medicine, engineering, biology, and business.

A higher degree in medicine or health, such as an MD or a master’s degree in dentistry, public health, epidemiology, or clinical genetics, will strengthen your application. Prior experience in biomedical informatics is desirable but not required.

Evaluation Criteria and Test Scores

Competitive applicants are proficient in spoken and written English. If you are a foreign student or a U.S. resident who has not taken classes in the United States, you must demonstrate English–language skills in reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension. We may give consideration to applicants who have participated in English–language scientific publications or other peer-reviewed literature.

We expect that applicants have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0. We do not require the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); however, we welcome you to submit your scores if available. We also invite you to include examples of code you have written as demonstration of your previous experience. Please upload these examples through our application portal along with your statement of purpose.

Official Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score reports should be sent to NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science, institution code 2596, department code 45. International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores reports should be submitted electronically to “NYU Vilcek Institute of Grad Biomed Studies.” Duolingo test scores can be submitted once you receive them by selecting “New York University Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences” from the drop-down menu.

• a CV
• a personal statement
• three letters of recommendation
• transcripts (If your institution does not provide a transcript in English, you must obtain a certified English translation through a credential evaluation organization such as World Education Services. We do not accept paper transcripts.)
• a photograph of yourself

Your application will not be reviewed until all aspects of the application have been received.

Program Schedule

The MS in Biomedical Informatics program is typically 12 months, but students interested in completing it on a part-time basis can submit a request to do so as part of their application.

Housing

We do not offer housing through NYU to master’s students and recommend that you look for living arrangements before arriving on campus and consider housing options other than those offered by NYU.

Tuition and Financial Aid

As a graduate student, your tuition is set according to NYU’s Graduate School of Arts and Science, which bills students per credit for the 34 credits required for the degree. Typically, MS in biomedical informatics students enroll in 12 credits per semester.
