Voice disorders, e.g., vocal cord paresis/paralysis and dysphonia (defective sound of voice), are also treated in the program.
The majority of patients served in the adult program have acquired aphasia, dysarthria, or cognitive-communicative disorders. (Individuals with aphasia have impaired ability to use or understand language. Those with dysarthria have difficulty articulating words. Both of these conditions are caused by central nervous system disease or damage.)
The intervention program is composed of individual and group treatment, computer assisted treatment, and counseling.
The Department is especially known for its work with individuals with acquired aphasia. In addition to its traditional services, the department provides former Rusk patients with aphasia with a non-fee group program for socialization and peer support. Four different groups meet weekly. These groups are listed on the National Aphasia Association registry of Aphasia Community Groups.
