Patient Services

• Physical therapy is provided to all inpatients on a physician-referral basis.
• An inpatient receives at least three hours of therapy a day, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychology services, and speech-language pathology services, as appropriate.
• Each school-age child is seen by a teacher certified by the Department of Education for one hour per day.
• The evaluation and treatment includes the patient, the family, and collaboration with any outside treating clinicians when available.
• Treatment is provided on an individual basis on land, or in the pool when appropriate. Various equiptment is used depending on each child's needs and goals, for example: positioning programs to maintain muscle length, a tilt table to increase a child's ability to stand, and an adaptive tricycle-riding program for building strength when appropriate.
• Group treatment is available by our physical therapists in the areas of strength training, ambulation classes, and pool therapy.
• Biofeedback treatment is available. See the description below under Specialty Programs: Motor Control Restoration Laboratory and Clinic, headed by Dr. Gianutsos.
• Pediatric-size wheelchairs are provided for use and training during the child's inpatient stay. Customized seating systems are fabricated, constructed, and provided as needed in collaboration with the occupational therapist.
• Physical therapy evaluations, progress reports, and discharge reports may be forwarded to the child's school or agency upon discharge by written request.
• Home programs, family training, and parent follow-up are an essential part of the rehabilitation process.

• Private insurance, New York City Department of Education contracts, Early Intervention, Medicaid, or self-payment is accepted.

• Various assessment tools are used, depending on the diagnosis and needs of the patient. Results are discussed with the family and other team members when applicable.
• Aquatic therapy is available upon physician referral on a group or individual basis. Please see Specialty Programs (below) for a complete description.
• Home programs and parent follow-up are essential parts of the rehabilitation process.
Back to TopNYU Medical Center Preschool and Infant Development Program
• The Pediatric Physical Therapy program provides therapy to children who are enrolled in the NYU Medical Center Preschool and Infant Development Program.
• This program has a center-based Early Intervention Program for children from 0 to 3 years of age and preschool-age children from 3 to 5 years of age.
• Physical therapy includes a variety of assessment and intervention approaches, which are provided during the school day. Please see the Evaluation and Treatment section (above) for more details.
• Classroom seating and positioning is provided for those children who require specialized seating systems. Children are placed on positioning programs in the classroom to help maintain muscle length. Positioning programs are selected based on the individual needs of the child and may include a standing program on a tilt-table, a long-sitting program to stretch the muscles in the back of the legs, or a prone program (lying the child with his or her stomach on a wedge) to stretch and strengthen muscles.
• Equipment and bracing for the home are ordered by our physical therapists upon physician prescription.
