Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program

The Rusk Institute Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, 17th Street and 2nd Avenue, is a center of innovation and excellence for the treatment of neurobehavioral disorders. We are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) as an inpatient specialty program in Brain Injury Rehabilitation and offer highly effective, interdisciplinary, individualized care for people recovering from:

    • Anoxic Encephalopathy

After sustaining a brain injury or experiencing a neurological illness, a person may experience a wide range of physical, cognitive, communication, behavioral, and emotional changes.  The Brain Injury Program at Rusk at 17th Street  is designed to provide a structured therapeutic program that can be specifically tailored to meet the medical needs of each person or consumer, as follows: 

  • The Stimulation Program
  • The Behavioral Management Program  
  • The Orientation Program
  • The Cognitive-Linguistic Program
  • The Life Skills Program

When a consumer arrives to the Inpatient Brain Injury Unit, he or she is assessed by the multidisciplinary team and then assigned to one of the five programs listed above based on his or her physical and cognitive needs.  During his or her hospital admission, the consumer might be moved to another program based on his or her progress. 
The goal of our program is to re-establish independence and self-sufficiency for the purpose of continuing a full, rewarding, and enjoyable life. Our program is cost-effective, patient centered and family focused.
